Cavs’ Williams getting closer to return
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) — Cavaliers guard Mo Williams made it through his first full practice of the preseason Wednesday after being slowed by a groin injury.
Williams strained his groin shortly before the Cavs opened training camp. Williams, who is expected to carry more of the scoring load this season following LeBron James’ departure, impressed new coach Byron Scott with his stamina during a hard practice.
Scott wants Williams to get through another “four of five practices” before he decides when the former All-Star will play.
The Cavaliers play San Antonio in Pittsburgh on Thursday before hosting CSKA Moscow on Saturday at Quicken Loans Arena.
Scott said forward Anderson Varejao is questionable for the Spurs. Varejao was sidelined with an ankle sprain and recently missed nine days of camp following his grandfather’s death in Brazil.
The Cavs also reduced their roster to 17 by waiving guard Cedric Jackson and rookie forward Tasmin Mitchell.
Jackson, who played at Cleveland State, appeared in 12 NBA games as a rookie last season for Cleveland, San Antonio and Washington. Mitchell is an undrafted free agent who played more games than anyone in LSU history.
